ABOUT OUR WORKSHOPS:

“Equipping for Leadership”

The program will now include training for Elected Leadership Roles and Responsibilities. The event is open to all members, regardless of their position within the organization. Individuals can participate in the training and educational opportunity for personal and corporate growth. Leadership training is central to the mission of United Methodist Women. Additionally, there will be a Spiritual Growth workshop and another workshop focusing on using Social Media to help “Grow UMW with Younger Generations”.

Class 1- President & Membership, Nurture, Outreach
A Bold and Courageous Path for Mission – Presenter- Paulette Moore-Hall
This class offers an overview of the United Methodist Women Leadership Responsibilities of the President and Chair, Committee on Membership. We are women engaged in God’s mission. Join us as we explore ways to organize for growth and encourage others to join United Methodist Women, a welcoming place to nurture our faith, experience community fellowship and to engage in mission.  Leave equipped to be bold and courageous for the journey in mission, impacting the lives of women, children and youth.

Class 2- Vice President & Spiritual Growth
Be Equipped for the Journey – Presenters- Endrika West & Suzanne McDougle

Vice President -Leader works cooperatively with the president and assists the conference in fulfilling the Purpose.  Guide the Leadership Team in its responsibility for planning and implementing program and events to strengthen mission and fulfill the Purpose.

Spiritual Growth – Spiritual Growth and theological development are at the core of United Methodist Women. We affirm The Book of Discipline, which says: “Lay members of The United Methodist Church are, by history and calling, active advocates of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Every layperson is called to carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20); every layperson is called to be missional” (¶127). United Methodist Women equips and affirms laywomen to explore and articulate theology and their faith journey.

Class 3- Secretary & Chair on Nominations –

Secretary – This class offers information on the secretary’s role on the Leadership Team and her responsibilities to all levels of the organization.  A brief overview of the duties of the office will be included’

Nominations – How you will engage in mission? You can become a leader. The future of United Methodist Women leadership is very important. The most effective leaders are those who are committed to the organization and understand its purpose, its history and its work. Finding this leadership is a great challenge but a very important one. Come learn how.

Class 4- Treasurer
Funding the Mission – Presenter, – Margarett Goodson
Mission Giving, which is mission money used for any part of our mission work, allows the work of United Methodist Women to reach far beyond the church walls and into the lives of women, children and youth who are often outside the bounds of our traditional ministries This class will give you a better understanding of the journey of your mission dollars$$$$.

Class 5- Social Action & Education & Interpretation
Presenter -Krystal West 
Leader works with the Leadership Team to engage members in service and advocacy for justice as it is rooted in our biblical tradition. She encourages work on the quadrennial priorities of United Methodist Women national office for the greatest potential impact for change. The 2016–2020, priorities are:
  • Criminalization of communities of color, with a focus on disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline.
  • Maternal and child health with, a focus on ending maternal mortality in the United States and around the world.
  • Climate justice, with a focus on United Methodist Women members’ personal and collective choices through the 13 Steps of Sustainability and holding corporations accountable for polluting and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Challenging economic inequality, with a focus on securing living wages for all.
  • Join us and learn More! More! More!
Education and Interpretation Coordination 
Presenter Theresa Graham
Promote and interpret the need for Mission Giving to fund the program of collective mission outreach of United Methodist Women with women, children and youth.  Promote the UMCOR Project and collect items annually.
Promote mission studies, Mission u, Leadership Development Days, United Methodist Seminars on National and International Affairs.   Promote the Scholarship for Mission u, Assembly, and much more.

Class 6- Secretary of Program Resources & Communications
The Reading Program Leads to Action! Presenter Melba Spann
Secretary of Program Resources – The Reading Program encourages members to think critically about current issues through an annual selection of member-reviewed books. It offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your spirituality and to broaden your understanding of our mission work. Come learn how you can be informed of and secure United Methodist Women-related resources for their task of fulfilling the Purpose.

Communications keeps us Connected! Presenter Lana Bowsher
Leader works actively to fulfill the Purpose and find creative ways to assist communications within United Methodist Women.  Work with elected leadership to promote the organization as well as publicize United Methodist Women activities at all levels; ensure that United Methodist Women actions are promoted via the Internet and social media.

Class 7- Spiritual Growth- Bible Study –
“Courage of Esther” Presenter Rev. Richard Heyduck 

Class 8- Using Social Media to Grow UMW Presenter, Kennidi Bowsher
In this class you will learn how to use social media in your local unit and district. Also, help you engage in a younger base to get them involved into UMW. This Workshop will help you grow your local unit with a younger group of women through outreach and social media interaction.
